Plant Science
Welcome to Plant Science at VTEC!
Do you have a green thumb or an interest in understanding the science behind growing plants?
The Visalia Technical Early College (VTEC) High School Plant Science Pathway equips students with knowledge and hands-on experience in horticulture, sustainable agriculture, and environmental stewardship. This program prepares students for careers in agronomy, landscaping, and plant biotechnology.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1: Foundations in Plant Science
- Introduction to Plant Science
- Principles of Agriculture
- Biology or Honors Biology
Year 2: Advanced Plant Studies
- Plant Anatomy and Physiology
- Soil Science and Fertility
- Chemistry or Honors Chemistry
Year 3: Specialized Training
- Greenhouse Operations and Management
- Sustainable Agriculture Practices
- Environmental Science
Year 4: Capstone Experience
- Advanced Topics in Plant Science
- Senior Capstone Project: Research or Internship in Greenhouses, Farms, or Botanical Gardens
- Elective: Urban Agriculture or Business Management
Certifications Offered
Students can earn industry-recognized certifications, including:
- Certified Horticulture Technician (CHT)
- OSHA Safety Certification
- Sustainable Agriculture Certification
Hands-On Learning Opportunities
VTEC's State-of-the-Art Facilities
Students gain practical experience in:
- On-campus greenhouses and gardens
- Laboratories equipped for soil and plant testing
- Outdoor spaces designed for sustainable farming practices
Work-Based Learning
- Internships with local farms, nurseries, and botanical gardens
- Field trips to agricultural research facilities and industry expos
- Participation in FFA (Future Farmers of America) competitions and projects
Career Pathway Outcomes
Graduates of the Plant Science Pathway are prepared for a variety of career options, including:
- Agronomy (Agronomist, Crop Consultant, etc.)
- Horticulture (Landscape Designer, Greenhouse Manager, etc.)
- Plant Biotechnology (Plant Geneticist, Research Scientist, etc.)
- Environmental Stewardship (Conservationist, Soil Scientist, etc.)
